A presentation of the lecturer's longstanding research into patterns of cultural consumption and everyday life in Serbia, using the theoretical perspective of Pierre Bourdieu.

“The new face of Belgrade: Recent urban change as un-modernization”

In this lecture, situated in the field of urban sociology, recent projects of urban renewal and revamping the image of Belgrade are analyzed, and explained as examples of simultaneous postmodernization and demodernization of the city.

“Serbian sociology in context”

The aim of the lecture is to trace the recent history of Serbian sociology from the times of socialist Yugoslavia through so-called blocked postsocialist transition to the present day. The emphasis will be on the degree of autonomy of the academic field and the relation of sociology and sociologists to dominant ideologies and political power.

“Nationalizing Yugonostalgia: The changing meaning of memories of socialist Yugoslavia”

The continuing salience of nostalgic memories of socialist Yugoslavia in its successor states will be discussed, arguing that the apparent constancy of the phenomenon obscures its profoundly changing meanings and shifting cultural and political implications.
